At the Rainforest Concern’s Neblina Cloud Forest Reserve about 130 kms north west of Quito, numbers have dramatically increased in the past two years and encouragingly many more cubs have been sighted. This is the only bear species found in Latin America and is classed as vulnerable.
The bears have a predominantly vegetarian diet and their fondness of sugar cane can result in farmers killing or wounding them.
