At the world's biggest birding event Global Big Day, 5th May 2018, biologists and researchers went out into Neblina Reserve and the surrounding forests of Junin and La Florida to survey bird diversity.
The rare Águila Andina also known as Black and Chesnut eagle (Spizaetus isidori) was spotted nesting close to Neblina. Listed as ‘Endangered’ on the IUCN red list, it is estimated that only 200 individuals are left in Ecuador. These low numbers are mainly due to habitat loss after conversion of primary forest to agriculture.
Ecuador is a global leader for bird diversity with 1,161 species recorded on global big day. 328 alone were documented in the Imbabura region where our Neblina cloud forest reserve lies.
