After four years of research, documentation and rigorous procedures, the first two of three areas of Rainforest Concern’s Neblina Cloud Forest Reserve have been granted legally protected SNAP status by the Ecuadorian Ministry of the Environment.

SNAP (Sistema Nacional de Áreas Protegidas) means that the reserve has enhanced protection under the law, giving increased security from threats like mining and securing the reserve’s lasting importance as an ecological corridor.

A ceremony in December including Sonja Dillmann, Tashkin Meza and Mauricio Bustamante - who all worked so hard on the application - the forest guards, local community, members of the municipal government and the Ministry of Environment will formally celebrate the reserve’s new status. In the meantime, the Ministry of Environment handed over the official documentation to Rainforest Concern’s Mauricio Bustamante this week.
