It’s been a year since Rainforest Concern and Beyond ONE announced the start of an exciting new partnership; continuing the active protection and preservation of endangered rainforests.
Beyond ONE sought to invest in the tangible protection of the invaluable and irreplaceable rainforests. Thanks to their support, in the last 12 months, the Neblina Reserve has been able to significantly expand in northwest Ecuador, with the acquisition of 480 hectares. This means that the reserve is now over 2,700 hectares.
The Neblina Reserve consists of tropical montane cloud forest - a unique, diverse, and threatened ecosystem. It forms part of the much larger Chocó-Andean Corridor, a project established in 1993 to create connectivity of forest habitat between protected areas. The reserve is located within the Tropical Andes Biodiversity Hotspot, the richest and most diverse region on the planet. It is home to many species such as spectacled bear; ocelot; oncilla cat; a recently discovered mammal - the olinguito; the newly rediscovered longnose harlequin frog, and the exceptionally rare black-and-chestnut eagle.
Markus Tagger, Group CEO of Beyond ONE, stated "As we embark on this profound journey, I am proud to see the positive impact Beyond ONE’s involvement has had on preserving these threatened rainforests. Together; we are not only committing to the protection of these endangered areas but also safeguarding the balance of our planet's biodiversity. This partnership not only echoes our steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship but also emphasises our belief in the power of collective action and as an organisation we are eager to see the positive change in years to come.”
The help of Beyond ONE in expanding this ecological corridor will reduce further habitat fragmentation, protect important watersheds, and assist species migration and survival. Rainforest Concern’s conservation of this cloud forest includes regular patrols, monitoring, scientific research, environmental education, and community outreach and putting in place legal protection measures.
